A Christmas Memory

It is not too late for a post about Christmas, is it?  My sister-in-law recently sent me this sweet picture she took of my little Ryan on Christmas Eve.  We have the tradition of putting on a family nativity play each year.   This year, Sophie wanted to be the angel, Emmy wanted to be Mary, and Ryan wanted to be a wise man.

The problem was, that when Emmy thought more about it, she started to feel shy about being Mary because that would mean that Joseph would be acted out by her dad, or one of her uncles.  She thought it would be silly for her to be so much younger than Joseph and said that she would only want to be Mary if Ryan would be Joseph.  But Ryan wanted to be a wise man!

When it was time to get suited up for the big show, I asked Ryan once again what he wanted to be.  "A wise man!"  He insisted.  With all of the enthusiasm I could muster, I said, "You can be a wise man . . . named Joseph!"  He seemed totally satisfied with that and then took his role very seriously.  For the duration of the play, he sat very still and calm, singing the songs, and then tenderly holding the baby Jesus.
